NextLesson Illustration System

NextLesson needed a visual language scalable enough to cover thousands of lessons across every grade and subject — and distinct enough that the brand wouldn't get lost in a sea of stock-illustration ed-tech. I built a character-driven illustration system designed to be assembled rather than redrawn each time: a kit of bodies, emotions, and props that could be combined to fit any lesson topic.

Three core kits — bodies, emotions, portraits — let us assemble new characters and scenes without starting from scratch. The constraint was the point: keeping the parts limited kept the visual style coherent as the library grew.

With the kit in place, the same parts could carry classroom scenes, family moments, group dynamics — whatever a given lesson needed.

Smaller spot illustrations covered abstract lesson concepts — economics, civics, biology, athletics. Each kept the same line weight and palette so any mix-and-match still looked like one library.
